Deborah Petrucci

Artist Statement

Upon discovering the near microscopic abilities of my camera, I began to be "up close and personal" with nature.  Practically climbing inside the Florida palm trees, I discovered a secret world of complexity, beauty and unexpected content.  Having already experimented with the contemporary 14" square canvas format in which I zeroed in on an interesting area of a photograph, I decided to continue on this path with a large series called, Nature Microcosms.

I single out a particular composition while photographing or painting to create either intricate realism or abstraction.  Part of the fun is how each person interprets the image differently.  I am struck by the micro/macrocosmic aspects - a small detail can also be read as the earth from above; the similarities of all natural forms, including the inner workings of humans.  My focus, as I continue with palms and the four seasons in nature, is the juxtaposition of hard and soft line, complexity and quiet, textured and smooth effects.  My upcoming paintings of the Birth of Spring have an ethereal mood and softness similar to the wonder and fragility of a newborn.

Having worked primarily with landscapes in the past, I have now come upon a world of wonders without borders.

Deborah Petrucci began creating as a young child, either drawing or sewing.  It ran in her bloodline; her grandfather being a sculptor in Italy, her father being an architect.  She excelled in art in high school, but did not continue until her adult years, when she dabbled in fashion illustration for a magazine and started her BFA at Suny Purchase in New York.

Being a member of Mamaroneck Artists Guild in Larchmont, New York from 1989 to present, she has had the opportunity to show in their exhibits as well as outside galleries, including the 2010 Small Works Show juried by Silvermine Guild Arts Center director, Jeffrey Mueller.  Numerous group exhibits in Westchester and New York City have accepted her works.  Deborah's journeys abroad, including painting in Italy the summer of 2001, provide her with a library of images.  Additional schooling at The Art Students League and Parsons School of Design in New York expanded her abilities to include interior design and architectural rendering.

Her many group, as well as solo exhibitions, have resulted in the sale of numerous paintings.  She continues to expand, challenge herself and discover new areas of painting with intrigue.
